LOVE Comes to Gloucester with New LOVEWorks Sign Unveiling on Loving Day
On Thursday, June 12, the community is invited to the official unveiling and dedication of a LOVEWorks sign, located on the gazebo lawn at Sanders Riverside Active Living Community, just off Gloucester’s Historic Main Street. The event will begin at 2:00 PM.
The unveiling will take place on Loving Day, which commemorates the landmark 1967 Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, brought by Richard and Mildred Loving of Caroline County, VA. The ruling forced Virginia and 15 other states to erase anti-miscegenation laws from their books. We now celebrate interracial marriage and the freedom to choose who you love and marry. The new installation joins more than 300 LOVEWorks signs across the Commonwealth, part of a Virginia Tourism initiative that promotes statewide travel and local pride through public art.
Made possible by the Cook Foundation, Gloucester’s LOVEWorks sign is designed to be a collaborative piece. While the frame and structure will be installed in time for the June 12 dedication, the letters will remain a blank canvas—inviting community members to contribute to the final artwork in the weeks that follow.
The new LOVEWorks sign will remain a permanent installation on the Sanders Riverside lawn, offering residents and visitors a lasting photo opportunity and place for community engagement and creativity.
Join us for the dedication event on June 12 at 2:00 PM and be part of this joyful celebration of art, community, and love.
